OK, ARose & Ring Lee O...that roller skates thing HAS to be a "girl thing" (age wise, you were, right?) as I don't think--I know--I've ever met a guy that wouldn't get ill listening to that song (of course, channel was ALWAYS changed immediately).

Just wondering if you have a place in your hearts for it still? Even if you don't like it now, but for old times' sake so to speak?

I have the "reverse feeling" for many songs I hated as a youngster; now they remind me of those days, and the "context" is all that matters...the hate has faded, and been replaced by "ah...memories...".

But, DEFN not so for that song...yikes.

Hope this doesn't seem like thinnly veiled sexism..."girls only" sorta thing (any guys willing to admit they liked it?).

I liked it, kind of, more like I liked it because of what it was about and daydreamed about my key opening some girl's roller skates someday.

Don't think I ever thought of it in that way! Maybe I would have listened to it if I had...

the song is straight-up sexual innuendo, no question.

"I think that we should get together and try them out, you see..."

the great thing about it was it wasn't quite out front about it all so it could be played at places kids would gather, like dances and skating rinks and while other songs were out of bounds this one snuck through the adult radar, kind of like a secret we were in on, ha, ha, parents and teachers you missed it! Oh and William Tell too.

Hey, WT, Melanie was smokin' in the day. She had a video for some song about, "Lay down the Napalm (?)" (I think "Candle" was in the title somewhere.) Anyway, my older brother had that "brand new rollerskate..." on 45rpm. Guess none of us should have been shocked when he became a hair-band afficionado in the mid-80's (when he was old enough to have known better!)

My first album was a K.C. and the Sunshine Band. The white one with the rainbow-type thingee across the cover. It was like $4.98 at G.C. Murphy's. I think "Shake your Booty" was the big hit off of it. Except for couple-skating to Elton John and Kiki Dee, that song was always the highlight of the afterschool skate party. (The alternative to skating was to stay home and watch Helen Hunt jump out a window while high on angel dust. (Do they still make PCP?))

Wonder if mom still has my forest green or maroon Tuf n' Rufs somewhere? I know she still has my black glasses (think Ernie from "My Three Sons").

TOOTMO the Cool (obviously)

Napalm? Now, THAT'S a great mishearing!

The song is Lay Down (Candles in the Rain). Thanks for reminding me; you've inspired me to start a new thread :-)

Heh heh heh. Don't 'spect she'd appreciate my misinterpretation, considering:

Little sisters of the sun
Lit candles in the rain
Fed the world on oats and raisins
Candles in the rain
Lit the fire to the soul who never knew it's friend
Meher Baba lives again
Candles in the rain
To be there was to remember
So lay it down again
Oh, lay it down
lay it down, lay it down again
Men can live as brothers
Candles in the rain

(copied exactly from the album liner notes)
chorus*
lay down lay down, let it all down
let your white birds smile up at the
ones who stand and frown
lay down lay down, let it all down
let your white birds smile up at the
ones who stand and frown*
we were so close, there was no room

[ From: http://www.metrolyrics.com/lay-down-candles-in-the-rain-lyrics-melanie.html ]

we bled inside each others wounds
we all had caught the same disease
and we all sang the songs of peace
chorus
so raise the candles high cause if you
don't we could stay black against the night
oh raise them higher again and if you
do we could stay dry against the rain
chrous
we were so close there was no room
we bled inside each others wounds
we all had caught the same disease
and we all sang the songs of peace
some came to sing, some came to pray
some came to keep the dark away
so raise the candles high
cause if you don't we could stay
black against the sky
oh oh raise them higher again
and if you do we could stay dry against the rain
chorus

Oh, yes, I dimly remember the "Candle" song. I was really into Melanie when I was ten or eleven. I also remember liking the "Some people say I've done all right for a girl ..." line.

I loved "I've got a Brand-New Pair of Rollerskates" -- loved my rollerskates too. I'd skate around my street singing that and Janis' Mercedes Benz.

Poor WT - we have stunned him into silence. Girly girls! I don't believe there's a female in my age range who doesn't like that song. (not wishing to make assumptions about your age range LOL)

It's the lyrics too - the guy who has his mom do his dirty work for him, there. We surely all had that experience.

Nope - I believe he's contemplating the implications of having the key to someone's rollerskates... hmm...

LOL. I'm sorry WT, I do like that song - still. It's cute. Really, it is :) I remember my mother even liked that one. My mother liked folk music, and loved Joan Baez, so I sort of associate stuff like that with earlier childhood, where my music was still parent-approved. Maybe that's why I feel fondly toward Melanie - my mom liked her. By the time we get to Elton John, we're talking about rebellion ... stuff my parents viewed suspiciously at best.

I saw Melanie live many years later, and enjoyed her then, too, including the roller skate song.
